The basic functions and priorities of the Clinton Police Department are to continue to maintain high professional standards by protecting the citizens of Clinton City through patrol, investigation, and preventive police work.

During the past year, the Police Department has had an increase in the number of calls requesting police service. We have increased the number of police officers from 8 full time to 11 full time sworn officers. This is attributed to the increase in population and the addition of more commercial businesses to the city. More often, the police officers are being called to situations such as domestic violence, where the victims are being assaulted and often by the use of some sort of weapon. The injuries sustained by victims are more severe than in previous years.

The use of methamphetamines has tripled over the past few years. We are finding this drug more and more during traffic stops, such as DUIs. Our DUIs have increased over the last year due to the continued D.R.E. (Drug Recognition Expert) Program. This program is utilized not only by this police department, but other agencies within the county; and officers have been trained to arrest DUI offenders that would otherwise have been released on standard field sobriety tests.

Through public prevention education, we are working to combat the violence and drug abuse in our city. Officer Todd Kelly is the D.A.R.E. Officer, as well as the Community Policing Officer who handles Neighborhood Watch, Citizens on Patrol, the McGruff Program, and all the other public relation oriented programs for the department. He also works with the Fire Marshall as Code Enforcement Officer to help enforce compliance with the city codes. Officer Kelly has also been the primary contact during the development of the Clinton City Youth Court. He has been responsible for obtaining the grants needed to operate the Youth Court.

The Clinton Police Department is committed to service and professionalism. It is our goal to continue providing the same excellent police service to our community as we have in the past.
